Winter has been around both Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant for almost their entire careers. You should really read the whole thing, but here are some excerpts that Lazenby has generously let me cut and paste:

A few years back, the Lakers coaching staff concluded Bryant and Jordan were much alike, almost eerie, in fact, when it came to the alpha male qualities of their competitive natures.

Kobe and Michael were ruthless when it came to winning, everyone agreed.

And their skills were similar.

Except Michael's hands were larger.

The major difference between the two came with college experience. Jordan had played in a basketball system for Dean Smith at North Carolina, thus he was better prepared to play within a team concept.

Winter says they're both very much alike:

"They both display tremendous reaction, quickness and jumping ability. Both have a good shooting touch. Some people say Kobe is a better shooter, but Michael really developed as a shooter as he went along. I don't know if Kobe is a better shooter than Michael was at his best."
Observers like to point out that Jordan played on a Chicago Bulls team with no great center, but Winter always countered that Jordan was a great post-up player and in essence was the premier post weapon of his time.
Bryant himself came into the NBA with amazingly good post skills, but there was never room for him to play in the post with Shaquille O'Neal occupying the lane during their years together with the Lakers.

In a lot of ways, Bryant is Jordan's equal as a post player, Winter said, except for one critical element. "What's happened to Kobe and his post play - and he is a great post player - is that he's catching the ball just out of the lane and the defenders are forcing him out toward the wing."

As a result of getting pushed out of the post, Winter worries that Bryant may rely too heavily on three-pointers, which Bryant often shoots against intense pressure.

Winter also admits that Bryant abandons aspects of the triangle offense with some regularity. But that's not Winter's main complaint with the guard:

"I'd like to see him play better defense," Winter said, adding that he had addressed the issue recently with Bryant but didn't come away with the idea that Bryant was intent on changing his approach.

"You know Kobe," Winter said with a chuckle. "He has his game plan. I think he heard me. But he feels there's a certain way he's got to play the game. But it doesn't involve a lot of basically sound defense."

Because the Lakers need so much of his effort at the offensive end, Bryant has adopted a save-energy plan on the defensive end, Winter said. "He's basically playing a lot of one-man zone. He's doing a lot of switching, zoning up, trying to come up with the interception.

"The way Kobe plays defensively affects the team," Winter added. "Anybody that doesn't play consistently good defense hurts the team. That's not only Kobe. Our other guards tend to gamble and get beat. Another problem is that the screen and roll is not played correctly."

Winter never really says who's better. But to me, at this stage that's a victory for the legacy of Kobe Bryant. Winter is tough, honest, and as good an authority on this topic as we'll ever get. If he thinks it's a debate worth having, that's really something. Not all that long ago only die-hard Laker fans were seriously making the case that Bryant might be Jordan's equal.

Los Angeles Lakers, Basketball History, Chicago Bulls

Sign in to add comment

buffedel5 (March 29, 2007 2:49 PM)

This is what a comparison article is supposed to look like. Rather then hearing the vague generalizations by Jemele Hill, Tex Winter gets into specifics about the difference in their games and (at least clearly to me) implies Jordan is better.

It is very interesting to hear how Winter thinks Bryant doesn't play very good defense, because one of the big arguments that most Kobe supporters make is that he plays such great defense.

I'll have to look for some of the things Winter said the next time I watch the Lakers.

Great article.
lakerman80 (March 29, 2007 3:24 PM)

hey buff, the only reason u like this article is because he agrees with u. so u rip hills article and praise this 1
allahtruth (March 29, 2007 3:25 PM)

buffedel5: "Tex Winter gets into specifics about the difference in their games and (at least clearly to me) implies Jordan is better."

Well I didn't get that at all. I think Tex basically said they were very similar. With Jordan playing better defense and had a better concept of team ball because he went to college. But as far as talent, when asked who was better Tex did not say either one. Probably because Kobe is not threw playing. He is 28 yrs old and still with a lot to learn and go in his career! Remember Jordan won his 1st title at 27/28 and the legacy of MJ was born. Before that He was just this spectacular player. (the most talented in the league) but not a winner. With that said I think Kobe has time to become something more special then what you are seeing!
MSR0024 (March 29, 2007 3:28 PM)

I agree, great article. Tex is the man who knows (maybe PJ himself only knows better). The defense comment is interesting and eye opening. I'm not one to say that Kobe is a superb defender, but I sure like his attitude of wanting to hold the best player, especially during crunch time. Even though Arenas hit him up for 60 that game, Kobe would not let PJ take him off of Arenas.

I'm an old fashioned guy, but when Kobe was a young pup and took that wild shot in the playoffs against Utah (airball) as well as personally asked Jordan "How do you maintain shooting strength when you shoot the fadeaway", I knew he would be special and he has become my favorite player ever sense. Doesn't seem to be the most likable guy, but I'm not asking him to babysit my kids. As far as I can tell, he takes his job more seriously than most, and works like a chain gang in the off season to improve his game.

Tex never chooses between the two though, which is interesting. He saw Jordan at his very best, and Kobe is still improving. I hope this will be a topic when Kobe's career is over, then we can all look at it more objectively.
webb157 (March 29, 2007 3:44 PM)

Michael Jordan average 35/7/7 in an era when league offensive averages were lower than they are today. He also shot over 50% for almost his entire career. Kobe has yet to do either of these. Some people say that the competition is much better today than it was then, but that's really impossible to prove, even though I agree myself. Could be that the rule changes have simply allowed less skilled players to put up bigger numbers. Let's not forget that a 40-year-old Jordan lit up some of the current competition not too long ago.

Regardless, Jordan dominated the entire league from the 2-guard position and won 6 titles. I hated him the entire time he did it too - but there's no way anyone with half a brain has the right to claim Kobe is better than MJ. That has to be one of the dumbest articles I've ever read. Jemele Hill should be banned from ever writing about sports again.
MSR0024 (March 29, 2007 3:56 PM)

Nah, can't ban her because that article has created a nice wave of post and conversation. Although Kobe is my guy, I also find it hard to compare him to MJ right now. Skill wise, he's right there, but Mike is and was an athletic phenomenon. He actually created a basketball culture. Kids go to the movies and on dates in jersey's and shorts because Mike made it look so damn cool!

Beware though, don't write Kobe the killer off, he'll read these post, get pissed off and score 125 on somebody (joking)!
blaklicorice (March 29, 2007 4:29 PM)

I grew up watching Michael, and being from L.A. I've watched Kobe for a great while now. I must admit, when people started comparing Kobe to Michael I was annoid. I didn't believe Kobe would reach that status. However, after watching Kobe these past couple years Kobe IS the best player in basketball, and can be compared (talent wise) to Jordan.

I disagree however with Tex on one point. Kobe doesn't have the strength to be as good in the post as Michael was. I watched Mike develope his post game gradually over a couple years until he was automatic. Jordan was much stronger than Kobe was.

Not only was Jordan's post game better, but his D was much better than Kobe's is. Kobe has the ability to play great D, but he takes time off unlike Jordan who was a pitbull on D...ALWAYS.

Kobe can shoot the lights out and I've seen both players (Michael & Kobe) be unstoppable on the offensive end. They both can take over at will. Kobe's jumper was developed much sooner than Mike's but Mike worked hard developing his shot.

Lastly, I don't think there has ever been a player like Mike as far as mentally defeating his opponent. I'm not saying Kobe isn't mentally tough, but he's no match for mike. I still think Mike is the All-Time greatest, but Kobe can be mentioned in the same breath as Michael with no problem.
trevorrmuniz (March 29, 2007 5:09 PM)

It is ridiculous to compare Michael and Kobe, just like Byrd and Jordan. They both dominate their era's and that is how it should be looked at. There were things that Byrd did that Jordan or Kobe could never do, and the same for Michael that Kobe can and will never do.

Jordan would get his shot blocked, or someone would steel the ball from him, and he would make sure that they did not score on the possession that they recieved from him. I mean he would block the fastbreak shot or steal it right back. Kobe on the other hand turns and looks at the refs instead of using his talent to go fight for what they just took from him.

Just like it has been said Jordan was perfectly rounded, not saying Kobe can't be, but right now with the team he has and the personel around him there is no way to compare the two. Without Pippen, Armstrong, Paxon, Kerr, or Rodman (and yes Rodman was a key ingrediant to their titles) Jordan would have only won three titles out of the six finals, and the Pacers probably would have a title as well as the Knicks. Once Kobe gets a supporting cast and the personel that fit just like Jordan did, the titles will once again flow for Kobe, and he might end up with 9 total titles. Time can only tell that.
zeekling (March 29, 2007 5:20 PM)

MJ is the Greatest, hands down...for now. Kobe has been the "Golden Child" every since he entered the league. What has spurned all this Kobe vs. MJ is that Kobe has so much potential. And all of you Kobe haters realize that Kobe has the POTENTIAL to go down as the greatest ever. He's still learning, and with his killer work ethic, Kobe Haters beware!!
andrewpalazzolo@hotmail.com (March 29, 2007 5:40 PM)

One comparison that you guys left out was that jordan won six rings....in a row
showtime40117 (March 29, 2007 5:44 PM)

I agree with Tex's analysis of Kobe's defense, but...confidently playing tough man to man defense on this Laker team is a little different than the confidence that you have while being out there on the floor playing defense with 1)scottie pippen 2)ron harper and 3)dennis rodman. Playing tough man, only to look over your shoulder while your teammates are gettting burned time after time gets a little frustrating after a while I'm sure. He needs to save himself a little right now for offense, and also play a little center field on D with this team. In basketball, no one will really own the title of KING. My vote goes to Magic Johnson to be honest. I'm sure Kobe will happy that he has and will put in enough work for his bust to be included on the Mt. Rushmore of Basketball.
laker_skin1 (March 29, 2007 5:50 PM)

very true, if he wasnt at least equall. we wouldnt be talking about it, and only the most extremest lean toward bias decisions.
bgeronimo (March 29, 2007 6:00 PM)

Michael Jordan is the Greatest of All-time. Enough Said.
buffedel5 (March 29, 2007 6:06 PM)

Lakerman80- I disagree with that. I like this article because it gets into DETAIL and doesn't enter into it with an agenda. I think when you enter into an article at "This player is better" and try and support that, you overlook the argument. I think writers are better off examining the question of who is better and looking at it from both sides, rather then writing an opinion piece, because in all reality, who cares about some columnists opinion? They're just another fan of sports, very few of them are qualified in experts as what they are writing about.

AllahTruth- I think the idea of ranking "talent" is misleading, because plenty of guys have a lot of talent but never put it together. You don't examine the talent of players, at least in my opinion, you evaluate who is the better basketball player. As for Kobe, I agree with that sentiment that he is just entering his prime. If Kobe can win a championship as the lead dog, that'll certainly raise his profile. I said this in another thread, but Kobe's only titles came when he was the 2nd best player on the team, Jordan was the best on his team. If Kobe can win a title or two with himself as the alpha male of the team, I think only then can you really begin to consider putting him in Jordan's league.

vincent reyes (March 29, 2007 6:20 PM)

First I want to say this was a good article, and I love the fact this is comming from Tex. Sometimes as a fan we get tired of hearing "think they know everything sports writers". I agree on what Tex said about Kobe and Jordans killer instinct to win. At the same time I disagree with the whose the better shooting debate. I have to say Kobe has Jordan on that one. Jordan was awsome at his midrange fadeaways etc. but beyond the arc or the long jumpshots Jordan just was'nt up to par with Kobe. On the defense tip, I have to say Jordan was a better defender. At the same time Kobe could play defense as good as anybody but just does'nt make it a priority. (which he needs to do) And last but not least, I don't think Tex was saying who was better, but just simply you could make the comparison. In my opinion when it's all said and done Kobe will be the better of the two.
espnbricebrice (March 29, 2007 6:47 PM)

Clearly Tex thinks MJ is better. Obviously the only reason he is only implying that and not saying it outright at this time is because he's actually coaching Kobe right now (and perhaps because he knows Kobe can push anyone he wants to out of town).
Validone (March 29, 2007 7:15 PM)

Read the context clues. Tex is the creator of the triangle. He says they are alike, but he is smart not to flat out say that Kobe isn't in MJ's league., because he is still on Lakers staff and don't want to offend upper management or Kobe. Phil and Tex thinks that MJ is hands down the greatest, but they are on Lakers payroll. The context clues are that "Winter also admits that Bryant abandons aspects of the triangle offense with some regularity" and that he would"I'd like to see him play better defense" and "The way Kobe plays defensively affects the team," Jordan embodied the triangle so well that it looked like he was out of it. He referred to Jordan and Pippen as pitbulls on defense because they attacked the offensive players relentlessly. These are trademarks of championships. Notice he starts from the individual comparisons and ends with team stuff! Very intelligent Tex. Give us enough to know, but not TOO much to keep your job! Thanks
tsleezhy (March 29, 2007 7:20 PM)

I don't think that Kobe is Jordan's equal. Kobe is equal to Kobe. People spend so much time trying to compare the two. Michael had his run and he was the greatest for his time. Kobe's time is now, and he is the best player in the game today. So, instead of trying to find Jordan's equal, why can't Kobe just be Kobe. And leave it at that. He deserves to be a name for himself. Not the other way around. Kobe has his strengths over Jordan and he has his weaknesses over Jordan. However, both of them are really really great players. And they are the best during their era's.
Ballin.024 (March 29, 2007 7:31 PM)

I've read both articles and they're both good... The only difference between the two is Jordan has MVP's, a bunch of scoring titles, and much more... Whats the same... MJ didn't win a championship without Scottie... and Kobe hasn't won one without Shaq... So My eyes Mikes the best but the game has changed so much now since then... If you could take Kobe this year or last and Take MJ in the '96 or '92 season they'd be pretty evenly matched...and lets just hope when Kobe retires he doesn't make the same bad descion like MJ did and come back.

God Bless to both
alvan1177 (March 29, 2007 7:50 PM)

The only reason why Kobe is not going to get an mvp is because those so call writers wants to dictate every thing(should be the fans)....if it's not Nash its Lebron please writers..ps... john stocton is better than Nash...SIMPLY SAID KOBE IS THE CLOSEST THING TO JORDAN..RESPECT......
turnerburner123 (March 29, 2007 8:16 PM)

You know, I like my superstars, too. No doubt about it. How they dunk, how they score, how they dominate, everything.
But the past years it's become a bit much in my opinion. There has been a "Race to MVP" column on NBA.com since the first week of the season, everybody is compared to who-knows-what kind of other superstar of the past or even the present. I mean, nowadays, the best player(s) of every team are superstar(s)! I'm just getting extremely tired of all this star talk 24-7, all year long. As I said before, I like my superstars, too, from time to time and Kobe's recent heroics certainly qualify for being discussed over and over again, and Kobe is also definetely worthy of being compared to MJ, but then you got the next day and it'll all be about a crazy game Arenas, Shaq, Yao, T-Mac, Duncan, Nash, Dirk, KG, Lebron, Wade or whoever had and what or who they compare to. See my point? There's probably even somebody writing me a response, that I forgot to mention this or that "superstar's" name in my listing. It's getting too much and I think the problem is that we all became obsessed with statistics at one point. Sometimes when I read some recaps about the games I just burst laughing because of some stupid "Elias Says"-column. Stuff like " It was the first time since 12 years that somebody who had scored 4 points the previous game scored 43 or more in the next.
Just imagine we would ban statistics from pro sports for 12 months. All you would know is who won, who lost, and if you really watch a lot of basketball or whatever sport it is, you'd still find out which player is hot and who's not. We just wouldn't be so stupidly obsessive about ever single game or every single player.
Sorry, John Hollinger, but true shooting percentage, margin of points scored and allowed, bla, bla, bla. In my opinion you're messing with the game.
aussie_tosser (March 29, 2007 8:35 PM)

It's awesome to read Tex's take on both players. Yeah, Jordan didn't have the luxury of hiding in a zone defence during his prime, also another point I haven't heard being touched on is the defensive hand-checking rule that Jordan played against. You know, the rule that the league changed after Jordan retired.

I was shocked that the Jemele Hill "article" was on espn at all, let alone the front page. I don't have the time and energy to dissect the key flaws and problems with her "story", unfortunatley I don't have the privilege of being paid by espn to rant and cheerlead about who my favourite player is and who's better.

Kobe walks like Mike, talks like Mike, plays ball like Mike, but how could the carbon copy ever be an improvement on the original?

He's an imitator not an innovator.

naysface (March 29, 2007 8:40 PM)

Good article, good points made. But guys, come on.

Kobe is now almost as good offensively, no doubt. once his post play improves, he's there. But keep somethings in mind. MJ was named to 9 all nba first teams (which buy the way is the record) and won a DPY award. Not to mention 6 rings as the number one option. 6. Kobe won his rings on a team as the number 2 with Shaq. And buy the way who won the finals MVP's on those 3 teams?

So come on. yeah he can score. big deal. so could bernard king and dominique. dont get me wrong, kobe is the best player in basketball today. but take over an entire game on both ends of the floor? Three peat twice on completely different teams as the number 1? Win DPY? he better get to work to mess with that resume.

***********************************************

Tex Winter Compares Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan

March 29, 2007 1:59 PM

Roland Lazenby's Lakernoise blog has all kinds of interesting points to add to this debate, from Phil Jackson's longtime right-hand man (and current Laker consultant) Tex Winter.

KOBE JOINS MORE LEGENDARY COMPANY

Since emerging as a household name early in his NBA career, Kobe Bryant has often been compared to one of the most celebrated athletes in American history, Michael Jordan. His extraordinary performance not only put his name in the "legends only" book, but also propelled the Lakers to their third straight win with a 121-119 triumph over the Grizzlies. Kobe, who also tied Jordan with his fourth 60-plus performance of his career, shot 20-of-37 from the floor. Pau Gasol registered 35 points and 15 rebounds for Memphis, while Mike Miller scored 33. If Kobe can tally 50 or more in Friday's outing against the Hornets, he would become the first player since Chamberlain in 1962 to record 50-plus in four consecutive games.

SHOOTING STUDS

Kobe Bryant, Lakers
121-119 win at Grizzlies
60 pts, 20-37 FG, 17-18 FT

Monday, November 27, 2006

WHO OWNS WHAT?
Pirates, sharers and real money

ANNIE X, a 30 year-old Fil-Am, drops her shoulder bag on the faded, grey carpet of her Manhattan apartment and goes straight to her computer desk, where her iMac G4 is busy calculating and saving files the whole day. She sits on the chair, folds her long-sleeved office shirt, and toggles the white computer mouse.

As the screensaver slowly fades out, a program window reveals itself; it is the program window of a ‘file-sharing’ software called ‘Limewire’. It turns out Annie has left her computer running the whole day to download two ‘No Doubt’ albums and three Full-DVD ripped movies: ‘The Matrix’, ‘Legally Blonde 2’, and, ‘Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind’.

Aside from the successfully downloaded music and movies, her Mac is also on cue to get a complete, $1,000-worth video editing software complete with its license code. Likewise, Annie’s computer shares some files to other computer users in the world who uses the same software that she uses - A kind-of a give and take operation.

Annie X, a lawyer, is an operative known in the cyber world as a ‘pirate’- a person who illegally obtains copyrighted files and shares them to the world using a peer-to-peer software like Limewire. By all definitions, she is a criminal.

Annie, being an educated person, must know the consequences of her deeds. Yet, why still do it? She offers her defense. “ I don’t share what I have downloaded from the network. I share what I own. And if sharing what you own is a crime, I don’t know what isn’t. Piracy involves selling things that you don’t own. I am simply sharing that I paid for. I am sharing what is mine”

She sounds correct, but digital media has a different take on it. In digital media, even though you paid the retail price, you DON’T own the materials contained. What you bought is not the song, the movie, or the program. What you paid for is just the ‘license’ to listen to the songs, watch the movie and use the program.

The author of the songs, the makers of the movie and the designer or company that made the programs retains ownership of the product, even though you paid top dollar for them.

This product, especially software, contains a license agreement that a purchaser is required to agree on. It states that actions contrary to the agreement, like sharing, copying etc., would invalidate the license to use the software, which will result in the termination of the right to use the program with no refund.

Music and movies has a scarier FBI warning to go with it; telling the buyer that copying, re-selling, public performance, and broadcasting of the materials contained is against the law and is punishable by years of imprisonment.

The crackdown

In 2005, the music industry suffered another setback in sales. Their sales figures had dropped to an alarming rate in spite of the popularity of ‘per-song’ legal downloading online stores like Apple’s iTunes Music Store.

The same is true with Hollywood. The box-office revenues plunged so low last year, the Academy awards even used its award night to remind the viewers to get back into the ‘theater-watching’ ways. Software companies also reported that due to software piracy, which gave the industry billions of dollars of losses, they have resorted to extreme measures to track down these ‘pirates’, including email tracking and forcing net providers to disclose account info on suspected software pirates

A few unlucky pirates’ have fallen down to these tactics, but there is still no sign of a piracy slowdown. In fact, the more these companies tighten the belt, the more pirates become convinced that piracy is right.

Distinguishing pirates

The entertainment companies and software companies has to distinguish between ‘pirates’ and ‘file sharers’. Anne is a file–sharer: She buys music, DVDs and software. She makes copies of them and shares them with her peers. Yes, she does download things that are on the Internet, but she does it assuming that the files she’s getting for free belongs to people who also bought these files.

The person who sells make-shift copies of CDs and movies in Canal Street, is a pirate. The young boy who rips his John Mayer CD and copies it for a friend next door is a file-sharer. Pirates don’t own what they sell. File-sharers believe they own what they share. Pirates are criminals. File-sharers are not.

So far, there is no clear distinction between the two, and sadly, some ‘file-sharers’ have fallen into the hands of the law and has been branded as criminals.

The freedom to share

Like Annie, millions of people use these ‘peer to peer’ programs to obtain and share digital files all over the world for the same reason that she has. It is not acceptable that people shell out $20 for a DVD and get to be told they do not own the product.

Likewise, spending $1,199 for Adobe CS2 and not have the liberty to make a copy of it to share it with a family member is just as outrageous. Who is comfortable with the idea of not owning what you buy?

Besides, the money people use to purchase these things is real currency and not a ‘mere’ license’ to use the real money. Real money should equal real ownership. And what you own, you can always share. No to Piracy, yes to file-sharing.
//postCount('rw-unique-entry-id-12-page0');// Comments | //postCountTB('rw-unique-entry-id-12-page0'); // Trackback

Beautiful Machines

30/03/06 22:58 |Reviews

Artwork by Val Guevarra

Album: Beautiful Machines
Artist: Pupil
Sony BMG Philippines 2005

LIKE dogs waiting for crumbs falling from the master’s dining table, fans of disbanded super groups are left to pick up the pieces of what once was.

Often, these pieces hardly resemble the glory days of these bands that used to rule the airwaves, and commanded astronomical talent fees for their shows. But for their staunch supporters, these are better than nothing at all.

The Eraserheads is perhaps the best example.

Since their disintegration in 2001, Ely Buendia, Marcus Adoro, Raimund Marasigan, and Buddy Zabala – the Fab Four of Pinoy rock, have tried other things that they hoped would continue, or even surpass the ‘greatest circus in Pinoy music history’.

After Ely left, the three remaining members tried to go on with Kris Gorra, the female singer and guitarist of Fatal Posporos, but the ominous signs of a sinking ship began to unravel. When Marcus left for the Northern Philippines to pursue a ‘surfing career’, the Eraserheads were no more.

Drummer Raimund started several bands; most successful of them is Sandwich, who managed to generate a hype that resulted in a multitude of followers. Respected and loved as Sandwich had become, it never got close to his former band.

Buddy Zabala, joined some underground acts like ‘Twisted Halo’, but his most noteworthy move was when he joined legendary group ‘The Dawn’ a couple of years ago.

Ely Buendia, the eHeads’ front man and chief tunesmith, formed ‘The Mongols’ and even released an album, which sadly, stalled and was proclaimed D.O.A.

When things did not work out with ‘The Mongols’, the music landscape has changed dramatically. Bands are back in style, and major labels signed rock groups left and right to catch up with the increasing demand.

In this scenario, Ely formed ‘Pupil’.

Sony BMG, the Eraserheads’ home record company, patched things up with their prodigal son and signed the group for some albums. And after months of production, Ely Buendia, Yan Yuzon, Dok Sergio and Boks Jugo debut record came out: ‘Beautiful Machines.’

As I juiced up my iPod to listen to the songs, I could not help but wonder why Ely hasn’t come up with any significant material since the eHeads album ‘Sticker Happy’. Has he really lost the gift? I am not in any way asking for Ehead-like material from Ely, just great tunes from a composer, who everyone knows can do much better.

His songs with the Mongols, were quite forgettable and self-indulgent to tell you the truth, but I can’t help but ask, will it be the same for this ‘Pupil’ debut? I guess there’s only one way to find out. Hence, after repeated playbacks, here’s my take: 14 tracks. Good album, but nothing out of this world, yet.

Beautiful Machines could be Carbon Monoxide volume three, with The Mongols album as its second installment.

It is undeniable that there are moments in Beautiful Machines that give the listeners a peek at Ely’s genius. But come on now, we have seen the full view years ago, haven’t we? Mere peeks won’t be acceptable anymore.

‘Different Worlds’ perhaps is the best track here, followed by ‘Blow Your House Down’ and the ‘Smashing Pumpkinesque’ – ‘She Talks to Trees’.

The Filipino tracks did not quite take off. They were more like the band’s ‘other English songs translated to Tagalog for mass appeal.’ Except maybe for the Rivermaya-like ‘Dulo ng Dila’, which will probably be embraced by the general listening public. But aside from that, even the carrier single, ‘Nasan Ka ?’, fell short considering Ely’s knack for writing sticky material.

It is really tough for ex-members of super bands to rise up from the shadows of the past. Paul McCartney made ‘Wings’ take off, but this feat is more of the exception than the general rule.

Moreover, it is tremendously hard for the new band mates of these ex-members of super groups, like Ely, to avoid being compared to his old pals. And to write material for an album with probably one of the most successful songwriters in recent OPM history is yet another wall to climb.

Five years after the Eraserhead cookie crumbled, we are still licking the crumbs scattered under the master’s table.

So far, the best tasting crumb yet is the one that turned out to be a ‘Sandwich’.

//postCount('rw-unique-entry-id-8-page0');// Comments | //postCountTB('rw-unique-entry-id-8-page0'); // Trackback

Poptimes Magazine

Magazine >

Monday, May 01, 2006

E-mail photo | Buy photos

over the Suns in Sunday's first-round Game 4 showdown. After Luke
Walton and Steve Nash wound up tangled on the sideline, officials
called a jump ball, which Walton won at center court. His tip found
Bryant, who dribbled up court and calmly sank a pull-up jumper at the
buzzer. His OT heroics were set up only after he and Smush Parker
combined for a similar magic act at the end of regulation. Parker stole
the ball from Nash with less than seven seconds remaining. Devean
George corralled the loose ball and got it to Bryant for a driving
tear-drop layin with 0.7 ticks on the clock. Bryant finished with 24
points and eight assists, while Lamar Odom scored 25 to lead L.A. Nash
(22), Boris Diaw (21) and Shawn Marion (20) paced Phoenix. With the
win, the Lakers hold a commanding 3-1 series lead and head back to
Phoenix for Game 5 on Tuesday (10:30 p.m. ET, TNT).

Monday, March 20, 2006

Bad Boy Review
Article posted August 10, 2005

Just how notorious are “bad boys”? You must delve into their world in order to grasp the complete picture. But it’s not that easy once you’re mindset is clouded with all-too dismal notions that these guys are nothing but perverse, obstinate, stubborn, snobs and difficult. Showbiz Stripped went head-to-head with the infamous “astigs” whose enigmatic appeal has had fans screaming for the past few years! Click on the video for a cooler recap, but first read on about two musicians featured in this episode.

Ely Buendia

Eraserheads was the most popular Pinoy rock band in the early ‘90s, thanks to the talent, extraordinary charm and experimental ingenuity of its members, vocalist/guitarist, Ely Buendia in particular. His voice and words matched with the mix of retro, rock and alternative beats were a fresh, dramatic and hypnotic hit to Pinoy music. However, the group disbanded a decade later, spurred by the departure of Ely.

Despite the dissolution of the Eraserheads, Ely remains visible in the music scene as the leader of the band, The Mongols. And his image as a haughty pop sensation remains. “I don’t live up sa kung anumang image ng tao sa ‘kin…. kaya maraming naaasar,” remarks Ely. ”Gusto ko tao pa rin ako when I get out, when I perform… Hindi ‘yung kung ang image ng audience sa iyo ‘yun ang gagawin ko. Kung gutom ako, galit ako, papakita ko talaga.”

Ely kids himself as the rebel “without” a cause, but take that lightly folks. He isn’t really headstrong and is never a moment shallow. His band mates from The Mongols have always given him the highest regard, some even initially intimidated from assuming he’s a stern perfectionist. But hang around with him a little bit more and you’ll find out he’s a generous guy who brings out the best in the group. Also, contrary to rumors, he doesn’t have a wild personality. Remember how quiet the break-up of Eraserheads was? His exit after all had nothing to do with any grudges. It was just simple way of moving on. “Physically, mentally, emotionally, I had to take a vacation because 10 years with the Eraserheads was sobrang draining, na-burn out ako…” recalls Ely.

Today, Ely combines fame and fatherhood and is also more open to talking about his life. However fans or critics perceive this music icon, he says “I’m just always true to myself.”

Bamboo Mañalac

Bamboo Mañalac is well-admired for his powerful presence and breathtaking voice that people wonder if his true persona takes a 180-degree turn when he’s on stage. On this perceived notion of being “wild” on stage, he simply notes that he’s focused in all of his performances. It is this unique concentration and energy that blows away the fans who admire him enormously. But even as such charm endears him to many, others have supposedly been turned off by his aloofness. “I maybe mysterious to some people, but if you see me walk in a mall, and come up to me…I’m fine,” Bamboo says.

Bamboo is no newbie to the world of rock. He was previously the lead vocalist for Rivermaya before leaving the country to study and work abroad. Upon his return, formed a new band interestingly named after him. He didn’t favor the band’s name at first but agreed to it as long as it referred to the four-member group. Since Bamboo, the band, introduced its kind of music, it has been praised by many critics and fans alike.

His creativity and music sense could have only come from his family’s gene pool. He recalls sticking to the walls the poems he got from his grandparents when he was young. His dad is into music as well and his mom has a background in theater. It could be his creativity that makes Bamboo an ambitious individual and at heart, simply a serious performer. And if the “astig” image is part of the consequence, so be it. “Astig means you’re cool,” Bamboo says, quickly adding, “I just know who we are [as a band] and what we do so I just focus on that.”

View related video

Discuss this story in the forums

Latest stories
» Love, Look at the Two of Them
» Ate Vi: 52 and Still Going Strong
» Remembering Miko Sotto
» Asia’s Songbird Sings
» Daddy’s Boys

Sunday, March 05, 2006

Version: Eraserheads

The Eraserheads live on

Here’s a legend any Filipino music lover would attest to be true:

A dozen years ago, four brilliant but then underrated musicians cast rocks into a pond.

Then lo and behold! Instead of causing ripples, it created a tsunami that swallowed everything in sight.

They were The Eraserheads. The pond was Original Pilipino Music.

And the tsunami was pop alternative; proudly Pinoy, made flesh then and has dwelt among us since. The end. Not yet.

Years after Ely Buendia, Raymund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala, and Marcus Adoro a.k.a. Eraserheads parted ways, the music of the acknowledged flag bearer of Pinoy pop alternative music continues to run through the veins of the very generation they defined. It’s all because they made nine groundbreaking studio albums that collectively sold more than a million copies; churned out, oh, only just about dozen or two hit singles that composed the collective soundtrack of a nation and; won every imaginable award the industry could give them.

And though some of their disciples seem to have moved on to R&B or acid jazz, trance or acoustic music, and maybe even other pop alternative bands, make no mistake about it: All still feel “Ligaya” and welcome “Toyang” “With A Smile” when they see her “Minsan” during “Sembreak;” standing under a “Maselang Bahaghari” in the “Alapaap,” just above the “Tindahan Ni Aling Nena” beside the “Magasin” stand where she dances “Ang Huling El Bimbo” in “Overdrive.”

Who’s “Toyang?” “Wag Mo Nang Itanong,” “Pare Ko.” More fantastically, The Eraserheads still serves as shining example to today’s new artists, whether they admit it or not.

They admit—hence, ultraelectromagneticjam.

Slated to become the biggest OPM album of 2005, the 17-track album produced by Jam 88.3 and distributed by Sony BMG Music Entertainment is composed of refurbished Eraserheads’ tunes done by an all-star roster tapped from diverse genres in the current OPM umbrella.

These are Paolo Santos (who did “Magasin”); Radioactive Sago (“Alcohol”); Imago (“Spolarium”); Isha (“Torpedo”); MYMP (“Wag Mo Nang Itanong”); Orange & Lemons (“Wag Kang Matakot”); Rico J. Puno (“Ang Huling El Bimbo”); Kitchie Nadal (“Ligaya”); Barbie Almalbis (“Overdrive”); Sponge Cola (“Pare Ko”); 6CycleMind (“Alapaap”); Francis M with Hardware Syndrome (“Super Proxy”); Cueshe (“Hard To Believe”); Brownman Revival (“Maling Akala”); South Border (“With A Smile”) and; Sugarfree (“Tikman”).

Eric Perpetua, associate program director of Jam 88.3 who masterminded the tribute album for this unlikely radio station to bankroll it, says pulling together ultraelectromagneticjam would’ve been a Herculean task had things not fallen into place.

“When I started doing this album, there were so many difficult hurdles,” says Eric. “Will Eraserheads give their imprimatur? Will Sony BMG Music Entertainment allow it? How will artists take to the project? Which Eraserhead song will each do? And how does one give justice to E-heads’ songs without being derivative?”

Fortunately, the gods of alternative music were listening and so sent friendly arrows along the way. When Eric broached the idea to Sony BMG Music Entertainment that owns the band’s catalogue, they readily gave their go signal—provided only named bands do the work “as befitting the stature of The Eraserheads.”

Next, Eric spoke to prospective top artists. You know, the ones who don’t need to be ‘bothered’ at this point to contribute to a compilation since all are already busy plotting their next albums, promoting their current ones, touring all over and/or going back and forth to the bank.

The response Eric got from them floored him.

“Everyone jumped at the idea!” says Eric. “It’s as if, they, too, were waiting for something like this to happen. All were excited; couldn’t wait to hit the studio.

Like us, the only question on their lips was ‘But which Eraserhead song?’”

Unknown to them, Eric had been reviewing the works of The Eraserheads. See, he was hoping of suggesting the right songs to them if they so much ask.

Unknown to him, no one had intentions of doing so, after all, each artist already has his own favorite E-heads’ song long before ultraelectromagneticjam came up.

These choices would tickle a smile from any The Eraserheads’ fan and, maybe, even from the boys themselves.

Isha, known for her Tori Amos-eque piano-and-vocals ways, lets it all rock for a change while adding a quirk to “Torpedo,” a song with lyrics that predisposes it for a male!

Ditto with Kitchie Nadal who couldn’t keep a straight face (caught on record) while mouthing the line “ilang buhok pa ba ang aahitin?” from “Ligaya.” To this day, she won’t say which crop from which part of her body she was thinking of then.

As for Imago and Radioactive Sago Project, who would’ve foreseen them doing unreleased E-heads’ singles? The first dredged up “Spolarium” from the album Sticker Happy and made it single material. The second did “Alkohol” circa-Circus in fashion that proves liquid, even if that be liquor, seeks its own level.

And remember “Superproxy,” that Eraserheads and Francis Magalona team-up? This time, they turn the tables on each other with Francis doing the singing and Ely busting the rhymes!

Wild. Crazy. Out of the box. But then, did anyone really expect different from anything that involves Eraserheads music?

“People have asked me, ‘Why the Eraserheads?’ The reasons are simple: No other band has made an impression and impact as big as they have on the music scene. No other band has captured every color—from A to D—in the demographic rainbow.

No other band can create musical magic the way Ely, Marcus, Raymund, and Buddy do when they come together. No other band is as witty, cheeky, spunky, and as Filipino when it comes to lyric. No one comes close to The Eraserheads, then and now,” says Eric. Amen to that.

To the credit of all who participated in this landmark album, these (approximating all the above) were never an issue, anyway. Instead, all went into the studio with a mind to pay tribute to greatness—the essence of which is universality and, most of all, individuality that allow it to be remodeled successfully any which way.

Indeed, there’s simply no right way of doing Eraserhead music. All are valid; all can only add to inexorable, inexhaustible template.

By the way, Eric did get the blessings of every Eraserheads member. Maybe not as quickly as he wanted. But he did.

“Maybe approval was not as forthright because they did not think I was serious. So many have attempted to pull this off in the past in vain, that’s why. But we were lucky. And now that the album is out, we say that we are honored,” says Eric.

And where better to launch the album on Nov. 29 than in UP Diliman, the alma mater of Eraserheads?

To be participated in by all of those involved in the fruition of the album, one can rightfully suspect it will turn out to be event of the year, too.

Now, nobody’s sure if the Eraserheads would be there, of course.

But nobody doubts it would be one “ultraelectromagneticjam.”

http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=g...fe04_nov28_2005

Trivia on: Eraserheads
The band members are busy-bees
by nature. Each one has other
involvements besides being in
Eraserheads. Ely has released
his solo album, Wanted: Bedspacer.
Raymund is affiliated other bands like
Sandwich and Squid 9. He has recorded
an album for Sandwich already. Buddy
recorded also one with the Itchyworms
(there's that "C" again). Finally, Marcus
is recording with rock legend Joey
"Pepe" Smith.

Trivia on: Eraserheads
Most of the band members have
guitar collections. Marcus has 12
guitars (electric and acoustic).
Buddy has 4 bass guitars. Why?
Basically it's because "different
guitars inspire different songs and
different moods." If it's not that it
would to have a good visual appeal
during performances.

Trivia on: Eraserheads
They are fans of The Cure. In fact,
Carbon Stereoxide was conceptualized
when they found inspiration after
watching a concert of The Cure.

The only other
re-make they ever recorded is
Ryan Cayabyab's Kapag Umuulan
for Ryan's Silver Album.

Trivia on: Eraserheads
Before any show they try not to
eat a lot because one of them
had a "bad" experience. How did
he escape the call of nature? He
asked his bandmates to play a
ballad.

Trivia on: Eraserheads
Vocalist Ely Buendia of the
Eraserheads co-directed the
Maskara video. It is actually his
second time to direct their MTV.
The first one was the under exposed
With A Smile video for the Aloha
Milkway compilation.

Trivia on: Eraserheads
one of their dreams is to do an
album in a far and isolated place
somewhere like what some foreign
acts do? They want to rent a house.
Convert one of the rooms into a
studio so they could record anytime
they want. Put in some "toys". And
one important prerequisite is a
swimming pool.

Trivia on: Eraserheads
Naming the Eraserheads' album,
Carbon Stereoxide, was based on
a superstition? It is called the "C"
superstition. Bass guitarist Buddy
Zabala insisted that the name of the
album should have the letter C.
Why? We don't know ...neither do
bandmates Ely Buendia and Marcus
Adoro. = ) Five other albums were
also entitled based on this superstition,
Ultraelectromagneticpop! (1993),
Circus (1994), Cutterpillow (1995),
Fruitcake (1996), and Sticker
Happy (1997).

Today, the band, consisting of Ely Buendia, Raymund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala and Marcus Adoro, has parted way, but alternative music continues to run through the veins of their generation.

More fantastically, Eraserheads still serves as a shining example of today’s new artists, inspiring the collation of the album ultraelectromagneticjam.

The 17-track album, produced by Jam 88.3 and distributed by Sony BMG Music Entertainment, is composed of refurbished Eraserheads’ tunes done by an all-star Filipino roster.

These are Paolo Santos, Radioactive Sago Project, Imago, Isha, MYMP, Orange & Lemons, Rico J Puno, Kitchie Nadal, Barbie Almalbis, Sponge Cola, 6CycleMind, FrancisM with Hardware Syndrome, Cueshe, Brownman Revival, South Border and Sugarfree.

Eric Perpetua, associate program director of Jam 88.3, said pulling together the album was no easy feat.

“When I started doing this album, there were so many hurdles,” he said. “Will Eraserheads give their imprimatur? Will Sony BMG Music Entertainment allow it? How will artists take to the project? Which Eraserhead song will each do? And how does one give justice to E-heads’ songs without being derivative?”

In response, Sony BMG Music Entertainment gave its nod provided only named bands do the work.

When Eric spoke to prospective top artists to remake the Eraserheads songs, “Everyone jumped at the idea,” each artist having his own favorite E-heads’ song.

Isha lets it all rock and adds quirk to “Torpedo,” while Kitchie Nadal couldn’t keep a straight face while singing “Ligaya.” Imago dredged up “Spolarium” while Radioactive Sago Project did “Alkohol.” Francis Magalona turns the tables by singing “Superproxy,” while Ely busts the rhymes.

There’s simply no right or wrong way of doing Eraserheads music. Any way is valid. And where better to launch the album today than in UP Diliman, the alma mater of Eraserheads?

The launch will be participated in by all of those involved in the album, with or without Eraserheads.

http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2005/n...051129lif3.html

Artists jam for E-heads’ phenomenal music

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s a legend any Filipino music lover would attest to be true. Twelve years ago, four brilliant yet underrated musicians came into the music scene and became the flag bearer of Pinoy pop alternative. They were The Eraserheads. Years after Ely Buendia, Raymund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala and Marcus Adoro a.k.a. Eraserheads have parted ways; their music continues to live in the veins of the generation they defined. It’s all because they made nine groundbreaking studio albums that collectively sold more than a million copies and churned out more than two dozen hit singles. Their hits composed the collective soundtrack of a nation and won every imaginable award the industry could give.

And though some of their disciples may have other musical preferences by now, there’s no mistake that everybody still digs "Ligaya," "Toyang," "With a Smile," "Minsan," "Sembreak," "Maselang Bahaghari," "Alapaap," "Tindahan ni Aling Nena," "Magasin," "Ang Huling El Bimbo," "Overdrive," "Toyang," "Wag Mo Nang Itanong," and "Pare Ko."

More fantastically, The Eraserheads still serves as a shining example to today’s new artists, whether they admit it or not. They admit, hence, "Ultraelectromagneticjam."

Slated to become the biggest OPM album of 2005, the 17-track album, produced by Jam 88.3 and distributed by Sony BMG Music Entertainment, is composed of refurbished Eraserheads’ tunes done by an all-star roster from diverse genres in the current OPM umbrella.

These are Paolo Santos ("Magasin"), Radioactive Sago ("Alcohol"); Imago ("Spolarium"); Isha ("Torpedo"); MYMP ("Wag Mo Nang Itanong"); Orange & Lemons ("Wag Kang Matakot"); Rico J Puno ("Ang Huling El Bimbo"); Kitchie Nadal ("Ligaya"); Barbie Almalbis ("Overdrive"); Sponge Cola ("Pare Ko"); 6 CycleMind ("Alapaap"); Francis M with Hardware Syndrome ("Superproxy"); Cueshe ("Hard to Believe"); Brownman Revival ("Maling Akala"); South Border ("With a Smile") and Sugarfree ("Tikman").

Eric Perpeta, associate program director of Jam. 88.3 who is the mastermind behind the tribute album for this unlikely radio station says pulling together "Ultramagneticjam" would have been a Herculean task had things not fallen into place.

He shares, "When I started doing this album, there were so many hurdles. Will Eraserheads give their imprimatur? Will Sony BMG allow it? How will artists take to the project? Which Eraserheads’ song will each do? And how does one give justice to E-heads’ songs without being derivative?"

Fortunately, when Eric brought the idea to Sony BMG that owns the band’s Education Revolution celebrates 3rd yearue, they readily gave their go signal provided that only named bands do the work "as befitting the stature of The Eraserheads."

When Eric spoke to prospective artists, the response he got from them stunned him.

"Everyone jumped at the idea!" says Eric. "It’s as if, they, too, were waiting for something like this to happen. All were excited; couldn’t wait to hit the studio. Like us, the only question on their lips was ‘But which Eraserhead song?"

Eric has been reviewing the works of The Eraserheads so he can come up with suggestions if any of them ask. But each artist already had his own favorite E-heads’ song long before" Ultraelectromagneticjam" came up.

Isha known for her Tori Amos piano and vocal styles rocks for a change while adding a quirk to "Torpedo," a song that predisposes it for a male. Kitchie couldn’t keep a straight face while mouthing the line ilang ahit pa ba ang aahitin? from "Ligaya."

As for Imagao and Radioactive Sago project, who would have guessed them doing unreleased E-heads’ singles? The first dredged up "Spolarium" from the album "Sticker Happy" and made it a single material. And remember "Superproxy," the E-heads and Francis M. team up? This time, they turn the tables on each other with Francis doing the singing and Ely busting the rhymes.

"People have asked me, ‘Why the Eraserheads?’ The reasons are simple: No other band has made an impression and impact as big as they have on the music scene. No other band has captured every color – from A to D – in the demographic rainbow. No other band can create musical magic the way Ely, Marcus, Raymund and Buddy do when they come together. No other band is as witty, cheeky, spunky and as Filipino when it comes to lyrics. No one comes close to The Eraserheads, then and now," says Eric.

http://www.malaya.com.ph/dec10/ente3.htm

Imagine seeing them bowing down with arms outstretched to Marcus Adoro who came onstage to surprise the audience and played bass to Paolo Santos’s rendition of the monster hit "Magasin?" They were shrieking, cheering and shouting for him.

And after the last song, "Huwag Kang Matakot" had been played by Orange and Lemons, the audience just refused to stand up and leave, as if waiting for some miracle to happen and the boys of Eraserheads would come crashing through the stage and play live! After all, unknown to the audience that night, Raymund and Buddy were also at the backstage separately, having been invited to the event by the organizers.

And there was one moment right there that seemed to beg for it, for old times’ sakes perhaps? But in our mind, that was a moment that longs to relive a golden era that has ushered in a whole new world for the rock scene in the local music landscape.

The occasion was a fitting pinnacle to the launch of "Ultraelectromagneticjam," the album released by Sony BMG Music Entertainment to pay tribute to the music of The Eraserheads and which, we were told, is now selling like hotcakes, even before the recording company could service a carrier single for the album. The fans just couldn’t get enough of them.

The artists who performed that night were Southborder ("With A Smile"), 6Cyclemind ("Alapaap"), Imago ("Spoliarium"), Barbie Almalbis ("Overdrive"), Sugarfree ("Tikman"), Kitchie Nadal ("Ligaya"), Isha ("Torpedo"), Sponge Cola ("Pare Ko"), MYMP ("Huwag Mo Nang Itanong"), Radioactive Sago Project ("Alcohol") and Cueshe ("Hard To Believe"). Sorely missed were Francis M who did "Superproxy," Rico J. Puno who did "Ang Huling El Bimbo," and Brownman Revival who instrumentally shot to fame via "Maling Akala."

And there’s more. Soon, the carrier single for "Ultraelectromagneticjam" will be launched, Francis M’s "Superproxy" and it will be accompanied by a music video that also features Eraserheads main man, Ely Buendia in it. You see, Ely collaborated with Francis in the recorded version of "Superproxy." Next single would probably be Southborder’s "With A Smile."

Don’t be surprised to hear that the Volume 2 of "Ultraelectromagneticjam" is well underway. Common lamentations we hear is that there are still so many of their E’heads favorite songs that were not included in the album.

So, to those who want to hear "Toyang," "Julie Tearjerky," "Tindahan ni Aling Nena," "Sembreak," "Kaliwete," "Cutterpillow," "Shirley," among many other hits being sung by the likes of Parokya ni Edgar, Hale, Bamboo, etc. you just have to sit tight and wait for the next installment to happen next year.

If you listen to "Ultraelectromagneticjam," you would surely want to go back to the original and listen to more of them. A reminiscing of sort. That happens to us everytime we enjoy our album’s personal picks: Southborder’s "With A Smile," Paolo Santos’s "Magasin," Brownman Revival’s "Maling Akala," Imago’s "Spoliarium," Rico J. Puno’s "Ang Huling El Bimbo," and Radioactive Sago Project’s "Alcohol."

And perhaps this is what the bosses of Sony BMG felt, too, that’s why they have thought of this wonderful idea of releasing a collectors’ dream, limited edition CD box set of all of Eraserheads’ albums with all of the trimmings – posters, videos, T-shirt, and other E’heads paraphernalia. Release date will soon be announced.

* * *

We sat down with Ely Buendia and the members of his new band Pupil last Tuesday at I.O. inside ABS-CBN compound in Quezon City and the first question we asked him was, how does it feel that there is already a tribute being paid to the Eraserheads for its contribution in the local rock music industry?

Ely, who we must say looks so much better now, even younger-looking than during the time we first launched him at E’heads, says "it still feels surreal" and smiles. "I’m happy," he adds, even as he acknowledges the great success of the tribute album just released.

So why was he not present at UP that night? Smiling, Ely said, "baka sumabog ang UP sa sobrang init." It is no secret that Eraserheads disbanded under a cloud of much internal chaos in 2000. The boys have yet to patch things up between them although Ely says he is at peace now.

He doesn’t regret anything, he reveals, not even the disbandment of the group. "I’m happy to have this new group to work on. It feels so much fresher and newer. Siguro kung hindi kami umalis sa E’heads dati, laos na laos na kami ngayon," he said meaningfully.

The pronouncements simply say everyone’s dream of a reunion concert for The Eraserheads happening anytime soon is just not going to materialize. "At least not now," Ely told us politely.

When complimented on his aura of calmness and peace, Ely says "salamat kay Dianne" referring to his partner and the mother of his five-year-old,very handsome son Eonboy. The beautiful Dianne also acts as Pupil’s manager. She was described by Ely as "my drink, my rock, my breath, my fire" in the album inlay of Pupil’s "Beautiful Machines."

Pupil, whose album sales reportedly ranks 2nd to the "Ultraelectromagneticjam" in Tower Records, is composed of Ely and guitarist Yan Yuzon, bassist Dok Sergio, and drummer Boks Jugo and its album is a homecoming of sorts for Ely in his home studio, Sony BMG Music. "I’ve come back like a prodigal son. I thank the BMG bosses, Rudy (Tee), Vic (Valenciano) and Ciso (Chan) for not losing faith in me," he ended.

http://www.mb.com.ph/ENTR2005120951377.html

Lo
The Philippine Star 12/10/2005

Mention Eraserheads to Ely Buendia and the guy’s face momentarily goes blank, as if he has never heard of "that group" at all.

It’s a put-on, I guess, because halfway through the brief interview, Ely does mention the "E-Heads" without batting an eyelash, but neither with any hint of fondness.

If you recall, Ely had a falling-out with the E-Heads (behind hits that includes El Bimbo) in 2000, prompting him to quit BMG Pilipinas, Inc., the company the E-Heads were under contract with.

But, according to Rudy Tee, big boss of BMG which has merged with Sony Music (the merger is now known as Sony BMG Music Entertainment), "The wounds have healed and (Sony) BMG has accepted Ely back like the prodigal son."

Before the "homecoming," though, Ely sort of wandered around, in 2004 breaking a brief lull in his career by forming a new group called Mongol (the pencil, you know, which is "cousin" to the "eraser") which disbanded after barely a year.

The music has to play on, so Ely is back with yet another new band called Pupil (not the little campus creature which uses a Mongol to write notes and an "eraser" to obliterate mistakes, but the part of an eye) composed of none (of course!) from E-Heads but two from Mongol, bassist Yan Yuzon and drummer Boks Jugo, and a new member, bassist Dok Sergio.

"I think this one will last," said Pupil manager Diane Ventura, Ely’s beloved partner in life (and in business), forgetting to add if she meant longer than the lifespan of E-Heads or Mongol.

Pupil (Ely came upon the name in a medical book) has just released its first album called Beautiful Machines, featuring eight English songs and six Tagalog songs, including Lost Guide ("a noisy ballad written by Yan), Dulo ng Dila by Dok, Hypersober by Bogs and eight songs Ely co-wrote with Diane (Different Worlds, Blow Your House Down, She Talks To Trees, Gamu-Gamo, All This Time, Dianetic, Kalawakan and Nasaan Ka, the carrier single).

"While Mongol was guitar-driven," said Diane, "Pupil is more pop."

Asked to elaborate further on what sets the Pupil sound from those of E-Heads and Mongol, Ely said, "That of E-Heads was more retro; I was then into the ’70s sounds – The Manila Sound. E-Heads was a chopsuey band, very folksy, and it created a sound to which people could easily relate. I guess that’s what made the band popular. I am now geared more towards modern sounds, more rock."

It’s not only Ely’s sound that has changed (for the better, hopefully) but his attitude as well. While before he seemed to be aloof ("It was just defense mechanism"), he’s now more engaging. Credit it, he joked, to "old age and family." He and Diane have a five-year-old son.

Did success really go into his (E)head and spoil him?

"In a way, yes, I must admit," said Ely. "Success tends to make you feel complacent because lahat ibinibigay sa’yo so nawawala ang challenge. What do you do when that happens?"

Out of and away from E-Heads, Ely Buendia seems to have his head in the proper place – at last?

http://www.philstar.com/philstar/news200512101701.htm

When the band disbanded in 2000, he formed a new group called the Mongols in 2002 and they had an album with Viva. OtherHeads members joined other groups. Buddy played bass for theDawn. Raymund (with whom Ely is not on speaking terms)-formed Pedicab.

Marcus went doing projects on his own.

The Mongols weren't as successful as the Heads. Now, Ely has moved to BMG Records and since one of the Mongols, Jerome, went abroad, they got a new member, drummer Dok Sergio, and decided to have a new name, Pupil, which has many connotations. "It can mean we're eternal students," says Ely, who, at 35, is now more accessible and less cocky than when the Heads were reigning supreme. "It can also refer to that part of the eye where light enters."

The other members of Pupil are guitarist Yanni Yuzon and drummer Boks Jugo. Yanni or Yan (which means John) is the most amiable member of the group. At 27, he is into a lot of things. He's writing the weekly script of "Going Bulilit" for ABS, penning a screenplay for Laurice Guillen, teaching at the Ateneo (where he majored on social science), and acts in theatre. He plays Romeo in the "Romeo and Juliet" production of Metropolitan Group to be shown at the AFP Theatre in January. Inah Feleo, daughter of Johnny Delgado, plays Juliet.

Yan has previously appearedin other Shakespearean plays like "Merchant of Venice" and "Macbeth". Also a song writer, he wrote the songs "Mary" and "Lost Guide" in Pupil's debut album, "Beautiful Machines". Dok contributed "Dulo ng Dila" while Bogs wrote "Hypersober" and "False Alarm". Ely and his wife-manager, Dianne, wrote the other songs: "Different Worlds", "Blow Your House Down", "She Talks to Trees", "Gamo-Gamo", "All This Time", "Dianetic", "Kalawakan", and the carrier single' "Nasaan Ka?" Fifty is the youth of old age.—French proverb

DISMISSING talks of a possible reunion concert with the other members of Eraserheads, Ely Buendia said it’s time for his kind of rock music to continue evolving.

‘I want to play all the rock that can still happen,’ he told media during a gig Tuesday to promote his new product, a brand-new album called Beautiful Machines.

Buendia, the trend-setting former headman of the iconic 90s band, E-Heads, now fronts for the 4-man fresh new group, Pupil. Following an ugly falling-out with the rest of the E-heads in 2000, Buendia formed a band called Mongols, which unfortunately folded up in May this year after releasing only one album.

Not to be disheartened, Buendia has rallied the remaining members of Mongols and formed Pupil. He chanced upon the word while reading a medical book. He liked the fact that pupil was the part of the eye where the light comes in. Guitarist Yanni Yuzon, a writer and a teacher, particularly liked the ‘eternal connotation’ of the name.

Buendia and Yuzon said the public can expect more experimental rock from their new group. Pupil’s other players are bassist Dok Sergio and drummer Boks Jugo.

Recorded at Wombworks Studio in Marikina City, the album features 8 English and 6 Tagalog numbers. On the potential hit list are cuts like Lost Guide, Mary, Dulo ng Dila, Hypersober. Together with his wife and manager Dianne, Buendia wrote Different Worlds, Blow Your House Down, She Talks to Trees, Gamu-gamo, and a few others. The album is distributed by BMG Records Pilipina.

http://www.tempo.com.ph/news.php?aid=19082

Then lo and behold! Instead of causing ripples, it created a tsunami that swallowed everything in sight.

They were The Eraserheads. The pond was Original Pilipino Music. And the tsunami? Pop alternative-----proudly Pinoy, made flesh then and has dwelt among us since. The end. Not.

Years after Ely Buendia, Raymund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala and Marcus Adoro a.k.a. Eraserheads have parted ways, the music of the acknowledged flag bearer of Pinoy pop alternative music continues to course through the veins of the generation they defined. It’s all because they made nine groundbreaking studio albums that collectively sold more than a million copies; churned out, oh, only more than two dozen hit singles that composed the collective soundtrack of a nation and; won every imaginable award the industry could give them.

And though some of their disciples seem to have moved on to R&B or acid jazz, trance or acoustic music, and maybe even other pop alternative bands, make no mistake about it: All still feel "Ligaya" and welcome "Toyang" "With A Smile" when they see her "Minsan" during "Sembreak;" standing under a "Maselang Bahaghari" in the "Alapaap," just above the "Tindahan Ni Aling Nena" beside the "Magasin" stand where she dances "Ang Huling El Bimbo" in "Overdrive." Who’s "Toyang?" "Wag Mo Nang Itanong," "Pare Ko."

More fantastically, The Eraserheads still serves as shining example to today’s new artists, whether they admit it or not.

They admit------hence, "ultraelectromagneticjam."

These are Paolo Santos (who did "Magasin"); Radioactive Sago ("Alcohol"); Imago ("Spolarium"); Isha ("Torpedo"); MYMP ("Wag Mo Nang Itanong"); Orange & Lemons ("Wag Kang Matakot"); Rico J Puno ("Ang Huling El Bimbo"); Kitchie Nadal ("Ligaya"); Barbie Almalbis ("Overdrive"); Sponge Cola ("Pare Ko"); 6CycleMind ("Alapaap"); FrancisM with Hardware Syndrome ("Super Proxy"); Cueshe ("Hard To Believe"); Brownman Revival ("Maling Akala"); South Border ("With A Smile") and Sugarfree ("Tikman").

Eric Perpetua, Associate Program Director of Jam 88.3 who masterminded the tribute album for this unlikely radio station to bankroll it, says pulling together "ultraelectromagneticjam" would’ve been a Herculean task had things not fallen into place.

"When I started doing this album, there were so many difficult hurdles," says Eric. "Will Eraserheads give their imprimatur? Will Sony BMG Music Entertainment allow it? How will artists take to the project? Which Eraserhead song will each do? And how does one give justice to E-heads’ songs without being derivative?"

Fortunately, the gods of alternative music were listening and so sent friendly arrows along the way. When Eric broached the idea to Sony BMG Music Entertainment that owns the band’s catalogue, they readily gave their go signal----provided only named bands do the work "as befitting the stature of The Eraserheads." So one down. Somewhat.

Next, Eric spoke to prospective top artists. You know, the ones who don’t need to be ‘bothered’ at this point to contribute to a compilation since all are already busy plotting their next albums, promoting their current ones, and/or touring all over.

The response Eric got from them floored him.

"Everyone jumped at the idea!" says Eric. "It’s as if, they, too, were waiting for something like this to happen. All were excited; couldn’t wait to hit the studio. Like us, the only question on their lips was ‘But which Eraserhead song?’"

Unknown to them, Eric had been reviewing the works of The Eraserheads. See, he was hoping of suggesting the right songs to them if they so much ask.

Unknown to him, no one had intentions of doing so-----after all, each artist already has his own favorite E-heads’ song long before "ultraelectromagneticjam" came up.

These choices would tickle a smile from any The Eraserheads’ fan and, maybe, even from the boys themselves.
Isha, known for her Tori Amos-eque piano-and-vocals ways, lets it all rock for a change while adding a quirk to ‘Torpedo;’ a song with lyrics that predisposes it for a male!

Ditto with Kitchie Nadal who couldn’t keep a straight face (caught on record) while mouthing the line "ilang ahit pa ba ang aahitin?" from "Ligaya." To this day, she won’t say which crop of hair from which part of her body she was thinking of then.

As for Imago and Radioactive Sago Project, who would’ve foreseen them doing unreleased E-heads’ singles? The first dredged up "Spolarium" from the album "Sticker Happy" and made it single material. The second did "Alkohol" circa-"Circus" in fashion that proves liquid, even if that be liquor, seeks its own level.

And remember "Superproxy," that Eraserheads and Francis Magalona team-up? This time, they turn the tables on each other with Francis doing the singing and Ely busting the rhymes!

Wild. Crazy. Out of the box. But then, did anyone really expect different from anything that involves Eraserheads music?

"People have asked me, ‘Why the Eraserheads?’ The reasons are simple: No other band has made an impression and impact as big as they have on the music scene. No other band has captured every color----from A to D--- in the demographic rainbow. No other band can create musical magic the way Ely, Marcus, Raymund and Buddy do when they come together. No other band is as witty, cheeky, spunky and as Filipino when it comes to lyrics. No one comes close to The Eraserheads, then and now," says Eric. Amen.

To the credit of all who participated in this landmark album, these (approximating all the above) were never an issue, anyway. Instead, all went into the studio with a mind to pay tribute to greatness-----the essence of which is marriage of universality with individuality that allow it to be remodeled successfully any which way.

Indeed, there’s simply no right way of doing Eraserhead music. All are valid; all can only add to inexhorable, inexhaustible template.
By the way, Eric did get the blessings of every Eraserheads member. Maybe not as quickly as he wanted. But he did.

"Maybe approval was not as forthright because they did not think I was serious. So many have attempted to pull this off in the past in vain, that’s why. But we were lucky. And now that the album is out, we say that we are honored," says Eric.

And where better was the album launched than last Nov. 29, 2005 than in UP Diliman, the alma mater of Eraserheads?

To be participated in by all those involved in the fruition of the album, one can rightfully suspect it will turn out to be event of the year, too.

Now, nobody’s sure if the Eraserheads would be there.

But nobody doubts it would be one "ultraelectromagneticjam."

http://www.titikpilipino.com/news/?aid=642

This he told the Manila Bulletin during a pocket interview to promote his new band Pupil’s debut album.

"It’s too early to be taking part in it and I don’t see myself being part of it kasi I’m still doing something here," said the 35-year-old hit-maker when asked to react how come he did not attend the reunion concert (featuring current local acts paying tribute to his former group) staged for Eraserheads recently. He even assessed, "To be part of it is like acknowledging na tapos na ako; isa na lang akong trophy na itatago na. Siguro kung uugud-ugud na ako, that’s the time I’m gonna look back."

However, Ely feels grateful about the entire concept of paying homage to Eraserheads music, particularly the album "Ultraelectromagneticjam" which features existing acts doing versions of classics mostly written by Ely himself during his heydays with former bandmates Raymund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala, and Marcus Adoro. "I don’t have a problem with that. I just feel it’s not yet the right time to do such tribute because I’m still doing something worthwhile."

Considered by many as the Eraserheads’ heart and soul, Ely must have a point telling everyone he "isn’t over yet" as far as his recording and performing careers are concerned. In fact, his new band Pupil just released its debut CD called "Beautiful Machines" under SonyBMG Music Entertainment.

The said album is composed of 14 all–original numbers, some of which are sung and written by Ely (as expected). A surprise pulled from Pupil’s sleeve, though, is the carrier single "Nasaan Ka" penned by Ely’s wife Dianne Ventura whom he considers his breath and fire and whose name also appears in the album singing the album title track. Completing Pupil’s lineup are guitarist Yan Yuzon, drummer Boks Jugo, and bassist Dok Sergio, the only fellow who wasn’t a member of The Mongols which came out with a minor hit called "Bulakbol" and was noted for being Ely’s band after the much-ballyhooed Eraserheads break–up.

Below, Ely answers our questions in a consistent manner—straightforward.

What led to the Eraserheads breakup?

Out of control na yung business matters, e.

Do you still talk with your former Eraserheads bandmates?

Hindi na.

Any regrets on leaving Eraserheads?

No, I left that band and I don’t regret it.

At this point of your maturity, what can you say about the Eraserheads?

Chopsuey band yun, exploring on various colors of music. I consider it as a folk band really. I always put humor in my songs then na hindi nakikita ng tao. Gaya nung sa "El Bimbo" may part dun ‘nasagasaan sa isang madilim na eskinita." Paano ka masasagasaan sa eskinita e wala namang bumabyaheng sasakyan sa eskinita?

How does your music differ then and now?

I was into Manila Sound then. I like to tell stories na makaka-relate ang mga tao because at that time you have to be popular or a big hit. This time wala nang ganong intention. I’m now more geared towards modern rock. Nahanap ko na rin yung gusto ko talagang sound which is guitar–driven. Kung dati ang daming tunog na maririnig sa mga kanta ng Eraserheads, ngayon sa Pupil stripped down ang arrangement, guitar, bass, and drums lang. Dati I was a derivative songwriter musically. Ngayon I get inspired by anything to write songs: picture, painting, movie scenes…

Do you see the parallelism between your post-Eraserheads career and that of the late John Lennon’s after he got freed off the Beatles’ yoke?

Naging parallel lang ang nangyari. John Lennon left the Beatles because he wanted to be free. I can kind of relate to that. But, in terms of career trajectory ngayon, I’m not going to do what he did, he hid for five years and became a hermit. I still want to do something better than I did before.

Can you say that you’re a better musician now or are you just going to a different direction musically?

Nag-iba lang ng direksiyon, tama ‘yon. Change is always good, not necessarily to become better or improve kasi subjective naman ‘yon. I just don’t want to do samething all over again and write the same kind of songs na ini-expect ng tao.

Its the Pupil’s album output better than that of the Mongols’?

In a technical sense the Pupil’s "Beauiful Machines" is better because the recording and arrangements sound much better for me. The Mongol’s "Buddhas’s Pest" got some good songs. But I’m always more excited about the newest stuff.

What do you want to tell your fans now that you’re back?

I just want my fans and hopefully, my fans to be, to appreciate my music. I’m lucky to still have my career in music as a job and as part of Pupil wala akong delusions to become as big as my previous band was.

http://www.mb.com.ph/ENTR2005121351680.html

A few weeks ago, Jam 88.3 and Sony BMG launched the tribute album, "Ultraelectromagneticjam: Songs of the Eraserheads," and it looks like it could be this year's best-selling release.

Some may think that it's too early for the group to get a tribute-the E-heads' former frontman Ely Buendia himself said in an interview that he feels "it's not yet the right time, because I'm still doing something worthwhile"-but the fans are loving it!

Appeal

The Eraserheads remain one of the most popular and important bands in OPM history. They're one of the few groups that have enjoyed multi-generational and multi-sectoral appeal, and have even been dubbed "the Beatles of the Philippines."

Composed of singer/guitarist Ely Buendia, lead guitarist Marcus Adoro, bassist Buddy Zabala, and drummer Raymund Marasigan, the E-heads released nine hit albums from 1993 to 2001.

Buendia left to form The Mongols, and was replaced by female vocalist Kris Dancel (of Fatal Posporos), but the new lineup didn't last long. Adoro quit, and the remaining members decided to call themselves Cambio.

That was the end of the E-heads, but not their music. Conceived by Eric Perpetua, Jam 88.3's associate program director, "Ultraelectromagneticjam" contains 17 Eraserheads songs interpreted by an all-star roster of artists.

Magic

Perpetua raves, "No other band can create musical magic the way Ely, Marcus, Raymund, and Buddy do when they come together.

"No other band is as witty, cheeky, spunky, and as Filipino when it comes to lyrics. No one comes close-then and now!"

The participating artists in "Ultraelectromagneticjam" were asked to pick their favorite E-heads song and reinterpret it according to their own styles.

They are: 6CycleMind ("Alapaap"); Paolo Santos ("Magasin"); Imago ("Spoliarium"); Barbie Almalbis ("Overdrive"); South Border, featuring Kelly Badon ("With A Smile"); Sugarfree ("Tikman"); Kitchie Nadal ("Ligaya"); Isha ("Torpedo"); Francis M and Hardware Syndrome, featuring Ely Buendia ("Superproxy 2K6");

Last track

Orange and Lemons ("Huwag Kang Matakot"); Spongecola ("Pare Ko"); MYMP ("Huwag Mo Nang Itanong"); Cuesh‚ ("Hard to Believe"); Radioactive Sago Project ("Alkohol"); Brownman Revival ("Maling Akala"), and Rico J. Puno ("Ang Huling El Bimbo"). The last track, "Para sa Masa," features the abovementioned artists.

The stand-out tracks in the collection are Francis M's reinterpretation of "Superproxy 2K6," Radioactive Sago Project's spoken-word take on "Alkohol," and Rico J. Puno's surprisingly fitting rendition of "Ang Huling El Bimbo.

http://news.inq7.net/entertainment/index.p...&story_id=60186

If this is a way of thanking Eraserheads, who themselves led the bandscene in the ’90s, then what a way to say thank you!

This package, which took off its title via the quartet’s introductory album, Ultraelectromagneticpop!, features justified renditions of familiar tunes from Ely, Raimund, Buddy, and Marcus. The artists who performed the tracks didn’t abandon their identity sound-wise nor try singing ala Ely. The real joy of listening to the album is hearing a band like Radioactive Sago Project sing, or for this matter, recite a number ("Alkohol") and make it sound as if it is their own composition and not a track originally recorded by Eraserheads.

With such consideration, 6 Cyclemind’s "Alapaap," South Border’s "With A Smile," Imago’s "Spoliarium," and Orange and Lemons’s "Huwag Kang Matakot" emerge likable, audibly interesting versions. In fact, even these guys whose questionable work for the phenomenal "Pinoy Ako" popularized the term ripoff, even took bit parts, this time from also-E-heads songs ("Kananete," "Julie Tearjerky") and incorporated it to their cut in a smooth way.

Good thing "Spoliarium," probably the most moving E-heads number that didn’t make it as a popular single during their heydeys, was performed well by Aya de Leon and the rest of Imago. This gives the original version (from the Eraserhead’s "Sticker Happy" album) a chance to be noticed and re-evaluated by the listening public at large.

With a lot more E-heads hit stuff not able to make it in the list, it is not surprising that E-heads fans are clamoring for a second edition of this project.

http://www.mb.com.ph/ENTR2006012854891.html

Eraserheads, had parted ways, the music of the flag bearer of Pinoy pop alternative music continues to course through the veins of the generation they defined. It’s all because they made nine groundbreaking studio albums that collectively sold over a million copies; churned out more than two dozens of hit singles that composed the collective soundtrack of a nation, and won every award the industry could give them.

And though some of their disciples seem to have moved on to R&B or acid jazz, trance or acoustic music, make no mistake about it. All still feel Ligaya, Toyang, With A Smile, Minsan, Sembreak, Alapaap, Tindahan Ni Aling Nena, Magasin, Ang Huling El Bimbo and Pare Ko.

The Eraserheads still serves as shining example to today’s new artists, whether the group admits it or not.

Ultraelectromagneticjam, the 17-track album produced by Jam 88.3 and distributed by Sony BMG Music Entertainment is composed of reburbished Eraserheads’ tunes done by an all-star roster tapped from diverse genres in the OPM umbrella.

These are Paolo Santos (who did Magasin); Radioactive Sago (Alcohol); Imago (Spolarium); Isha (Torpedo); M.Y.M.P. (Wag Mo Nang Itanong); Orange & Lemons (Wag Kang Matakot); Rico J. Puno (Ang Huling El Bimbo); Kitchie Nadal (Ligaya); Barbie Almalbis (Overdrive); Sponge Cola (Pare Ko); 6CycleMind (Alapaap); Francis M with Hardware Syndrome (Super Proxy); Cueshé (Hard To Believe); Brownman Revival (Maling Akala); South Border (With A Smile); and Sugarfree (Tikman).

Eric Perpetua, associate program director of Jam 88.3 who masterminded the tribute album from the unlikely radio station to bankroll it, says pulling together Ultraelectromagneticjam would have been a Herculean task had things not fallen into place.

"When I started doing the album, there were so many difficult hurdles," says Eric. "Will Eraserheads give their imprimatur? Will Sony BMG Music Entertainment allow it? How will arttists take to the project? Which Eraserhead song will each do? And how does one give justice to E-heads’ songs without being derivative?"

The gods of alternative music were listening and so sent friendly arrows along the way. When Eric broached the idea to Sony BMG that owns the band’s catalogue, they readily gave their go-signal, provided only named bands do the work "as befitting the stature of The Eraserheads."

Then, Eric spoke to prospective top artists. The ones who don’t need to be "bothered" at this point to contribute to a compilation since all are already busy plotting their next albums, promoting their current ones, touring all over.

The response Eric got from them floored him.

"Everyone jumped at the idea!" says Eric. "It’s as if, they were waiting for something like this to happen. All were excited; couldn’t wait to hit the studio. Like us, the only question on their lips was ‘But which Eraserhead song?’"

Unknown to them, Eric had been reviewing the works of The Eraserheads. He was hoping of suggesting the right songs to them if they so much ask.

No one had intentions of doing so – after all, each artist already has his own favorite E-heads’ song long before Ultraelectromagneticjam came up.

The choices would tickle a smile from any of the Eraserheads’ fans and, maybe, even from the boys themselves.

Isha, known for her Tori Amos-eque piano-and-vocals ways, let it all rock for a change while adding a quirk to Torpedo.

Same with Kitchie Nadal who couldn’t keep a straight face while mouthing the line "ilang ahit pa ba ang aahitin?" from Ligaya. To this day, she won’t say which crop of hair from which part of her body she was thinking of then.

As for Imago and Radioactive Sago Project, who would have foreseen them doing unreleased E-heads’ singles? The first dredged up Spolarium from the album Sticker Happy and made it single material. The second did Alkohol circa-Circus in fashion that proves liquid, even if that be liquor, seeks it own level.

And remember Super Proxy, that Eraserheads and Francis Magalona team-up? This time, they turn the tables on each other with Francis doing the singing and Ely busting the rhymes.

"People have asked me, ‘Why the Eraserheads?’ " says Eric." The reasons are simple: No other band has made an impression and impact as big as it has on the music scene. No other band has captured every color – from A to D – in the demographic rainbow. No other band can create musical magic the way Ely, Marcus, Raymund and Buddy do when they come together. No other band is as witty, cheeky, spunky and as Filipino when it comes to lyrics. No one comes close to The Eraserheads, then and now."

To the credit of all who participated in the landmark album, these were never an issue, anyway. Instead, all went into the studio with a mind to pay tribute to greatness – the essence of which is marriage of universality with individuality that allows it to be remodeled successfully any which way.

http://www.philstar.com/philstar/NEWS200602141704.htm

A month after tallying 62 points in just three quarters, Kobe Bryant put his name No. 2 on the all-time NBA single-game scoring list by dropping a ridiculous 81 points on the Raptors Sunday night, in a 122-104 Lakers win. Not Since Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points over 40 years ago has the NBA seen a performance like this. Chamberlain scored 100 for Philadelphia against the New York Knicks at Hershey, Pa., on March 2, 1962. Now Kobe's name resides second with 81 on Jan. 22, 2006 in Los Angeles.

"It hasn't really sunk in yet," Bryant said after the game. "We had four days off coming up and I would have been sick as a dog if we lost. It turned into something very special."

Special doesn't do it justice. Bryant drilled 28 shots from the field, including seven from three-point land and went 18-20 from the charity stripe. There are few words to describe that kind of line. The man himself had a tough time grasping it.

"I couldn't even dream of this when I was a kid, not even in my dreams." Bryant said. "It's tough to explain, it just happened man."

Kobe scored 55 points in second half alone. That's more than anyone other than Kobe has scored in the NBA this season -- for an entire game. The 55 was also just four shy of Chamberlain's record for points in a half.

Kobe obliterated the Lakers all-time scoring record -- 71 set by Elgin Baylor in 1960. Only four players in NBA history had even scored over 70 points in a game, and none of those are named Michael Jordan. Chamberlain, Baylor, David Thompson and David Robinson were the only people to crack 70 until now -- you can add KB to that list.

After the game Lakers great Magic Johnson gave Bryant a call to congratulate him on the performance, a gesture that will leave a lasting effect.

"Talking to Magic after the game meant more to me than the 81 points," Bryant said. "Him calling me after the game meant more than the points."

STAPLES Center was electric with chants of MVP for Bryant as he drilled his 80th and 81st points from the free throw line, points that put his name second on this list.

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Gerald Wallace made the grand opening of the Charlotte Bobcats Arena a happy occasion.

Wallace scored 25 points, including a go-ahead follow shot with 2:23 left in overtime, to lift the Bobcats to a 107-105 comeback triumph over the Boston Celtics.

The sellout crowd of 19,026 not only saw a win in the first game in Charlotte's glistening new building but witnessed the second-year franchise move above .500 (2-1) for the first time in team history.

Boston held a 101-91 advantage with 3:38 remaining before Charlotte scored the next 11 points, capped by Brevin Knight's jumper with 1:31 to go that provided a 102-101 lead.

The contest eventually went into overtime at 103-103, with the teams exchanging early baskets before Wallace broke the tie with his layup.

Paul Pierce, who scored 30 of his 32 points in the first three quarters, had a chance to tie the game at the end of the extra session, but his shot rimmed out into the arms of Charlotte's Keith Bogans.

Boston shot 54 percent (32-of-59) from the field through the first three quarters but made only seven of its final 37 shots, including just one basket in the final 10 minutes of the fourth quarter and overtime.

The Celtics (1-2) have split two overtime games and lost at the buzzer to Detroit on Friday.
